After a couple years of searching on and off, I found this little guy on Craigslist:

I asked a few friends for inspiration on what to do with my record cabinet, and got some great suggestions...and discovered Knack Studios through my friend Cassie. Unfortunately for my productivity, I'm now obsessed with Barb from Knack, and how she re-purposes sad looking furniture to be completely amazing. I don't want to steal any of her pics of things I'm thinking about doing to the little cabinet, so I suppose you'll have to wait and be surprised.

Also, this week, we made a quick trip to Chicago, and got to visit CB2 and IKEA. Mecca. I snatched a go-cart desk so that we can move the desktop comp around a bit easier and watch TV in bed like a hotel. Unfortunately, the loft was not included with the purchase of the desk, and the chartreuse file cabinet and chair are not currently available.

Tomato-Mushroom-Mozzarella Strudel
It's not pretty, but it tasted good. I blended about 1.5 cups of mushrooms with a tomato, then layered it in with walnuts and mozzarella in between cooking-sprayed layers of phyllo, then baked it on 300 til golden. I would have added some oregano and a pinch of salt to the tomato-mushroom blend upon second cooking...

These lovelies are Cowboy Cookies, which I ate growing up, and recently found a Bakerella version. I bake them according to her recipe except I'm a purist, and don't use M&Ms. Just chocolate chips all the way!

Can I tell you how glad I am to have a few spare minutes? Over the course of the past couple months, I knew I'd have to back off because of moving, trips, and 60 hour work weeks. But hooray, I'm back, and I found the most awesome bag in NYC this weekend. No, I didn't buy it, but maybe someday.That's right, you can get a messenger bag (or tiny pouch) in the Pantone of your choice.

I love etsy, who doesn't? After taking a letterpress class this weekend, I'm very excited to start loading my etsy store with all kinds of fun and exciting things.
First up is my letterpress project #2. If I was awesome, I would have laid out the text correctly, but by happy accident, it was backwards, which ended up being sort of humorous. Check it out in etsyland, and while you're at it, think about how I could justify getting this bookshelf that's about to become too popular for me to get it, but I don't care (the IKEA Expedit):

Sorry for the lack of posting over the past couple of weeks. We are moving to a new apartment, and have been painting like maniacs. Please excuse the hiatus, and be assured that in another week or so, I will have moved in, and have a beautiful black and white checked kitchen floor that I always dreamed of. To get you through, here's a recipe for a pretty unbelievable Peach-Blueberry Crisp:

BLUEBERRY - PEACH CRISP

CRUST:

3/4 c. flour
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/3 c. rolled oats
1/3 c. butter, melted

TOPPING:

2 c. fresh blueberries
1 tbsp. lemon juice
1/4 c. flour
2 c. sliced fresh peaches
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a large bowl, combine flour, rolled oats and brown sugar. Pour melted butter over all and stir until crumbly. Press into bottom of 8 inch square pan. In large bowl, combine all of topping ingredients; mix well, spread over crumbs and bake uncovered for 35 to 40 minutes.

It's from Cooks.com (I'd love to give credit to the author, but there's none listed), which I don't normally use, but this little gem might make me change my mind.

Are you excited about my giveaway tomorrow? I am.

Until then, I would like to commend a couple of ah-mazing websites to you. (And yes, I meant to say commend, not recommend - English teachers, be proud)

First. Bluelines - the now defunct, yet archived blog of Blueprint Magazine. Another experience with the magazine curse (I like a magazine, decide to subscribe to it, it bites the dust - other examples include New Attitude and Domino - watch out MSL, Shape, and Lucky...you're next).
Even though it's all old info, it's beautiful, just like Blueprint was. Also, many of the contributors have left their internet footprint, so you can keep up with all the great design work they're doing.

Second. Cookie's Nesting Blog - I think a good reason to have kids is so I can subscribe to this magazine without feeling weird about it. It's like Domino for moms. Of course, all the moms are just like me with their Brooklyn townhomes and mid-century ranches. But it's not too smarmy to keep me from loving it, and the nesting blog has these great house tours.

This past week, I made sour cream chocolate cake. It was unreal. The pictures are pretty unrepresentative of how delicious it was. This made me realize how I really need another camera.

Sour Cream Chocolate Cake

Cake:

2 cups all purpose flour ¾ cup dairy sour cream
1 cup water 1 teaspoon salt
¼ cup butter or margarine 1 ¼ teaspoons soda
1 teaspoon vanilla ½ teaspoon baking powder
2 eggs 4 oz. melted, unsweetened chocolate, cooled
2 cups sugar

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour an oblong pan (13x9), or 2 9-inch, or 3 8-inch round layer pans. Line bottom of pan(s) with wax paper. Measure all ingredients into a large mixer bowl. Mix 30 seconds on low speed, scraping bowl constantly. Beat 3 minutes on high speed, scraping bowl occasionally. Bake 40-45 minutes for an oblong pan, bake layers 30-35 minutes or until the top springs back when touched lightly. Cool. Frost.

It's important that the chocolate is cool before adding it to the other ingredients. Otherwise, little bits of it will harden in the batter when it comes in contact with the cold eggs and sour cream. Another way to possibily avoid the hardening of the chocolate is to allow all the dairy ingredients to be at room temperature before mixing.

Sour Cream Frosting:

1/3 cup butter or margarine, softened ½ cup dairy sour cream
3 oz. melted, unsweetened chocolate, 2 teaspoons vanilla
cooled
3 cups powdered sugar

Mix butter or margarine and cooled chocolate thoroughly. Blend in sugar. Stir in sour cream and vanilla. Beat until frosting is smooth. The comments above about the chocolate apply to the frosting as well.

This is the second time I've made this delicious paella that I found on AllRecipes, and modified to pescaterianism. It's amazing, and a little spicy. Pair it with New Belgium beer.

INGREDIENTS (serves 8)

2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon paprika
2 teaspoons dried oregano
salt and black pepper to taste
2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
3 cloves garlic, crushed
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
2 cups uncooked short-grain white rice
1 pinch saffron threads
1 bay leaf
1/2 bunch Italian flat leaf parsley, chopped
1 quart chicken stock or vegetable stock
2 lemons, zested (or 1 teaspoon lemon pepper
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 Spanish onion, chopped
1 red bell pepper, coarsely chopped
1 pound soy chorizo sausage (Trader Joe's)
1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined

DIRECTIONS

1. In a medium bowl, mix together 2 tablespoons olive oil, paprika, oregano, and salt and pepper. Stir in shrimp to coat. Cover, and refrigerate.

2. Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet or paella pan over medium heat. Stir in garlic, red pepper flakes, and rice. Cook, stirring, to coat rice with oil, about 3 minutes. Stir in saffron threads, bay leaf, parsley, chicken stock, and lemon zest. Bring to a boil, cover, and reduce heat to medium low. Simmer 20 minutes.

3. Meanwhile, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a separate skillet over medium heat. Stir in onion; cook 5 minutes. Stir in bell pepper and sausage; cook 5 minutes. Stir in shrimp; cook, turning the shrimp, until both sides are pink.

4. Spread rice mixture onto a serving tray. Top with meat and seafood mixture.

I found this blog called East Nashville Atomic, which loves mid-century ranch houses. I love it not only for the fact that they're in my old neighborhood, but because they do cool DIY stuff like this.
Please teach me your ways, ENA.
Expect an update on sour cream chocolate cake in the near future. I have great memories of this from growing up, and the fact that the one time I handled most of the baking of it, it was the lightest and fluffiest the cake had turned out to date (and we made it several times per year).
Also, perhaps you noticed the header is new. It's my first foray into CS4, so expect even better things in the coming weeks.

I've had a thing for whales lately. Okay, not just lately. The whale thing started with this skirt:

I bought it in college at a resale store, and no one else I knew liked it. That's okay, I was also the only person I knew who was buying clothes off eBay, and look who's laughing now...or whatever.

I don't know how whales came to define preppiness, but they're there, from the iconic Vineyard Vines whale to all the JCrew whales.

So anyway, it seems to me that whales have been making a comeback in my life. For example, Patagonia. Also, I think the Twitter Fail Whale is just about the cutest thing ever, and I get the giggles every time I see it. I saw this amazing whale chalkboard posted over at ISuwannee, and I feel like it's telling me something. Something like "buy me."

So sorry for the long hiatus, we were in Texas for a bit, and I was basically internet-less, which was very nice. However, upon my return, I was pleased to see an almost exact copy of our current IKEA bedding situation on the Cookie blog. I was this close to getting that green duvet cover, but opted for a grey one instead, just because. But seriously, right down to the IKEA throw on the end of the bed. Have I sold out to the Swedes? Or, to quote "Be Kind, Rewind" - have I been "Sweded"?

I can't deny my love for IKEA.

After a self-imposed Target ban, I simply had to go pick up some dishwashing liquid because, well, you know, no one else has dishwashing liquid besides Target....um, anyway.
I had almost forgotten about Orla Kiely's line for Target, and I finally saw it today in person. So cute! The aprons are very fun, and I'm a sucker for anything with dots. I have my eye on the serving tray, and am hoping that St. Louisians are too uncultured to notice all the cuteness, and that I can snag it on clearance. Yes, that's how cheap I am.

Desperate times call for practical purchases....like a dustbuster. I'm turning into my Nana.
